I Believe

I believe

I believe any individual had the ability to accomplish their goals, regardless of what others say.
Today society is always telling us how we need to have a certain score on our ACT or any test, and it will tell us how educated we are and how far we could go in life. In high school my counselor was notorious for talking about scores, IQ, college and what she thought was a good career plan. After taking the ACT’s a couple times and not scoring well I thought I wasn’t smart enough to attend college.
When I was younger I was known and still am known as the more creative type, one who uses the right side of the brain more than the left. I really wanted to go into design. When telling my counselor she just kind of ignored it and was more annoyed with the fact.
Even though I had the grades and the Grade point average I still had trouble believing myself. When senior year came around I made myself decide on what I wanted. I did this by going back into my child hood and remembering what I wanted to be, but within the years had pushed aside. I came to realized that I always wanted to be a dental hygienist, but never thought I had the ability to go through that much school and make the requirements that it asks for. When my counselor from high school heard she told how more successful this career would be than the other. Now I still want to be a designer but I really want to get dentistry finished with first.
In getting good scholarships from butler and talking to an academic counselor from Wichita State about the dental program. I realized I had the ability and the ambition to accomplish this goal.
Just within this year of college I have learned a lot about myself and my beliefs. And I believe anyone can accomplish their goals regardless of what you are told and how society views your goals. If you want something bad enough you will get what you want, all you have to do is work hard to get it.

Learning Profile

Learning Profile

The common themes that we covered this semester were more of a reflection on ourselves. How we cope with change, manage our time, plans for our future, how we use butler resources, community service. In reading the text we learned how our personalities fit our study habits, and what ways will help us stay focused and study better. We also did reflections on the different subjects that we covered and published them on our blogs. We created blogs at the beginning of the semester, and personalized it. On there we put our six assigned writings and some other assignments that we did during the course.
My strengths as a learner is getting the inspiration to succeed in getting good grades. When getting a desired grade on a test makes me want to do even better on the next test. Activities that come easily to me are ones that involve creating things or ideas to help figure out the solution. I am better at dealing with visualizing the task at hand. I would teach a new student different study skills, so they could figure out what works best for them. Also in learning more about your study skills makes you manage your time more efficiently.
My weaknesses are learning to ask more questions when I don’t understand. I am to stand offish when a teacher asks “any questions”? I don’t think quick enough to ask the question, I always have to have time to process the information. Analyzing questions that involve mathematics always make me take more time in figuring them out. I would say I need to work on my asking questions in class so that I can get what I need to get good grades. Also my weakness was getting my blogs done on time, it is very hard to find the time to get those done on top of your other classes home work. My advice to you is to get them done as soon as you can so that you don’t end up like me and our typing this paper the night before the class is over. Getting this done on time is definitely one of my weaknesses.
In this class I thought learning more about personality helped with my time management and my study habits. Also it was very interesting to know about the Sam Spady video, and hear information about her life and her parent’s organization. We always think it couldn’t happen to us, but the truth is it could happen to anyone. It affected me because many people don’t know about all the deaths that occur due to alcohol poisoning. The most important skill I learned was how to cope with change and to manage my time. In coping with change made me realize I’m growing up and stop staying in the past. Managing my time helps me get focused on the problem and get it done quickly, while having time to have fun.
The Sam Spady video was very interesting and good to know. It affected me in a source of being more responsible about myself and others when going out. Also the butler resource lecture was very good to know about as well. It will help me now and also in the future too.
The text that we went over all had a meaningful impact on my life. One thing that I enjoyed about this class was how comfortable and open we all go to be in talking about our personal lives. This course is really good to take to know more about the campus and what butler has to offer for every individual attending this school. Many people don’t take this class seriously and don’t come or do not try to do their work. Yes it is a little extra but it does help in the long run. Now I know more about how to do research, and where to go to get good information and articles.
This course is not hard it helps you know more about the college you are going to. Always try to make it to the class because you don’t want to get behind. This course is one of those things you have to do to get where you want to be. You may think it is a waste of time but really it helps and you have to take it any ways so you should make the best of your time and the teachers. What people need to realize more is that there are so many ways to use the resources at butler to your advantage. Every staff member at butler is ready to help you at any time and always will help you through and academic problem.
I think this course has helped me get to know myself better and strive for what I want in my future. The instructor is very good at what she does; she is not just another teacher telling you what you should do she gets your opinion about the subject. You also get more involved in this class then other classes. I thought this class was really neat to take, and I wish anyone who takes this class luck!

Community Service

Community Service

I took a look around my community and noticed a few things that could be changed. The major thing I noticed is how the community has abandoned the elderly people, those that live in the care homes. Most have no families that live around here, and are starving for attention and to have a conversation that doesn’t require talking about their health problems.
If the community would pull together and begin a small organization that would work out a scheduled time to visit them.
To accomplish a good community service organization the volunteers need to see how lonely some people are. I am not saying that all individuals who live in a care home are lonely. Many families go and see their loved ones who live there, but what about those who don’t have a spouse and their children do not live close by.
If those who join the organization would rotate times during the week to visit them the elderly would get the attention they need and deserve. They have given to the community, now it is our turn to try to give it back to them. Think about what you would want when you are their age. Everyone deserves to have companionship; wouldn’t you like to have someone to talk to?
If we would pay more attention to those who need our in the easiest way, all we have to do is listen and to just be there so they feel they closure. With this idea I hope that we all can come together and give back to the elderly.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic Dishonesty

Nobody gets any where when they cheat. Yes, you may get a good grade on a paper, test or even in the class, but it will catch up to you.
There are no easy ways in life, and learning to take the easy way by cheating is not going to help you through college.
Many of us can admit that we have at least once cheated in school. What I don’t understand is why we would want to jeopardize our college careers. In getting caught in college could result in getting kicked out of the class or it will be written in stone on your transcript.
Don’t take the way that always seems easy, yes everyone has the ability to be dishonest in school. The internet is very helpful when it comes to writing papers, but lets admit it we take advantage of it. When writing papers we don’t realize that we plagiarize on our papers. When we think that we are just going to switch around a few words is still dishonesty.
In life you can’t be lazy, because you won’t get any where in life with out working hard. Even though you may fail a test because you didn’t have time to study, that is better than any dishonesty in academic on your transcript.
If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything and everything.

Butler Resources

Butler Resources

My case study was about an eighteen year old girl who is going through hard times. Her hard times being: boyfriend of two years breaking up with her, parents getting a divorce and finding out that she is pregnant. As all of this is happening she is also adapting to her first year in college. In complete panic she doesn't know where to turn, how can this be happening to her?
First thing I would tell her is that you can over come this. Many young women go through the same thing that you are. It might be hard to do by yourself but Butler has resources that can help you through this. There are counseling sessions offered through the school and also through the town. In El Dorado they have a pregnancy center that is located right on central when coming into Butler, they will offer you a free testing and direct you to further help if needed. Not far from there is a counseling center that can help you through the hard times.
In using these resources to your advantage will help you through the break up, your parents divorce and your pregnancy. It may be mind boggling thinking about being to young to be a parent, but you to learn to take responsibility towards your actions. Even though you want out of it, and you want it all to go away; stick with it. Count your blessings, and always remember that someone somewhere is going through a similar situation or even a harder time.
Let your parents intervene with your situation it could have a positive outcome for their relationship if they have to pull together for the benefit of you and their grandchild.

Academic Plans

After attending Butler County Community College I plan to transfer to Wichita State University. I want to major in dental hygiene, and also receive a bachelor’s degree in this profession.
The requirements for applying to this program are the following: college English I, general chemistry, introduction to microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, general psychology, principles of nutrition, public speaking and introduction to sociology. After this semester I only have to take a nutrition and chemistry class. In getting my bachelors degree, I decided to stay one more year at Butler to get the requirements finished with.
During the summer I plan to take a math class along with a nutrition class.
The fall semester I will be taking mostly classes that will look good on my application and go towards my degree.
During high school I was fortunate enough to be to take college courses. I was eligible to take college English and college speech, I took the courses there at the high school which was a familiar environment, and I am glad I did it that way.
In getting my degree I want to work for my family dentist, he has inspired me to choose this profession.
Hopefully all that I have planned will work out well, and I look forward to seeing where it will all take me.

Time Management

Time Management
Time is something we wish we had more time of. It is either working well with you or against you. Some of us enjoy keeping it, others hate it.
I would like to think that i manage my time very well for how young I am. I work forty hours a week, and have a reasonable amount of homework. Most of the time I plan my school assignments to work around my work schedule. Taking psychology classes helped me learn new ways to memorize text. One of the ways was reading over your material before bed, and go back over it in the morning. For the most part it has worked quite well for me.
Studying on the weekends is so hard for me; the hardest part is setting time aside even though sometimes it means not hanging out with your friends. When I Manage time wisely I feel more energized and more head strong about my academic abilities. When managing time poorly I tend to feel more lazy and less confident in myself.
In looking back I would say I manage my time better than in high school. Even with more stress and responsibility I have adapted to the change and learned how to deal with it.
Overall I would say that I have done well these past semesters in my time management skills.
